Students at Volta Elementary in Chicago donated food to The Salvation Army to give to people in need within their community.
Dream Drive
Dream Drive is a partnership between Sam’s Club, Off the Field (NFL Players’ Wives) and the Salvation Army. For this event, Off the Field ladies shopped for Salvation Army families at Sam’s Club for Christmas presents. For the past two years, the event was held in five Sam’s Clubs throughout the country.
On Thursday, December 10th, Dream Drive was expanded to include 10 cities: Dallas, Houston, Buffalo, Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Miami, Kansas City, and Detroit–one Sam’s Club location in each city.

100 Children and Chaperons Set to Attend Miner Christmas Party at Midwest Corps
For at least 65 years, Miner Enterprises has sponsored The Salvation Army Annual Christmas party for children in Chicago — at least that is as near as David Withall, Miner president, can pinpoint. Withall’s grandfather, Albert P., started the annual event in 1944, he believes.
What was the catalyst for the party? He is not sure, but David Withall, the third Withall to serve as Miner president, says the children’s party is part of their company fabric. He believes his children and his brother’s children will continue to sponsor the annual event.
“It is tradition,” he said. “I am personally proud that we can carry it on through another generation. Folks out there need it.”
When the party began, Miner was located in the Rookery in downtown Chicago and since has moved 40 miles west to Geneva, IL. But the party stayed in Chicago.
This year about 100 children and their chaperones will be treated to The Annual Miner Salvation Army Midwest Corps Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 2:00 p.m. until 5 p.m., at the Midwest Corps Community Center, 20 S. Campbell Ave., Chicago.
The guests will be treated to lunch and gifts in the gymnasium, which will be transformed into a ballroom for the day.
The Metro Youth Band will perform Christmas songs and lead a sing-a-long, and the Midwest Dance Group will present “The Christmas Story.”
The afternoon will conclude with a visit from Santa Claus. Attendance at the event is by registration, which is closed.
Miner Enterprises was founded in 1894 after W.H. Miner developed a revolutionary draft gear for cushioning the impact between rail cars. When Miner died without heirs, Albert P.Withall bought the business that the family continues to run to this day.
The Salvation Army thanked Albert P. Withall’s son, William E., posthumously with a humanitarian award for service after his death in 1998.

The Salvation Army 24 Hour Red Kettle Marathon
The Salvation Army Junior Board will have a 24 hour Traveling Bell and Red Kettle, Friday, December 4th starting at 5pm. Stop by to say hello and make a donation at the following locations:
- 5 pm – 9 pm: Lake and State (near ABC studios)
- 9 pm – 1 am: Lincoln and Belden in Lincoln Park
- 1 am – 5 am: State and Division
- 5 am – 8 am: Belmont and Wilton
- 8 am – 1 pm: Washington and State
- 1 pm – 5 pm: Michigan Avenue (Water Tower)
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign traditionally raises approximately 70 percent of the funds used year round to provide programs and services for people in need in the Greater Chicago area. This year’s goal is $12 million.
Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party “Celebrate the Reason”
For nearly 30 years, The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division has hosted a holiday party for senior citizens living in the Greater Chicago area. In previous years, there was no charge for the event; however, this year due to the economy, seniors will be charged $5. More than 1,600 seniors are expected to attend this year’s event, which will feature food, gifts and entertainment provided by The Salvation Army staff.
Since many senior citizens live alone, The Salvation Army’s annual senior Christmas party, like other Army programming for seniors, is designed to provide seniors with companionship and activities.
